RDC Documentary Work Shop
From this day I have learnt different techniques that I would personally use for my documentary. From watching the other documentary's I got several ideas from how i would start and end my documentary, also from editing the documentary's I thought of different songs and editing techniques that I would use.

Documentary Modes
Expository Mode - America's Most Wanted
The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary where they expose the issue and have a clear logical argument, where you have emphasised verbal commentary.
The documentary maker uses
Observational Mode - 16 & Pregnant
The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary that shows realistic events whilst the film-maker is a neutral observer. Meaning that you do not hear or see the documentary maker.

Participatory Mode - Reggie Yates
The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary that shows direct engagement between the film-maker and the subject(s)

Reflexive Mode - Catfish
The documentary maker is trying to achieve a a truthful and clear narrative structure throughout the documentary that he is making.

Performative Mode - How gay is Pakistan
The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary that shows the documentary makers story. The makers story is the focus of the documentary.
The documentary maker uses

The audience interpret this mode as very realistic due to the camera set up where the shots are badly composed. Another reason this is shown as realistic to the audience is because of the way that the maker reacts to certain things for example at the time coed 12:15 where he is speaking to the imam about being gay you can see that the makers reaction to what he says he is shocked.

- Dramatisation at the time code 6:33 there is dramatic music being played in the background this adds dramatisation to the documentary as the audience are made to believe from the music that is playing that something interesting or bad has happened.
- Narritivisation this has been shown during this episode as there have been real events that have been shown as a story by using voice overs to explain to the audience in more detail what is happening during the show. At the time code 5:01 the documentary maker is speaking about one of the people coming from a nice place. This shows narrative as the documentary maker is telling the story of someone to the audience.
at the time code 9:27 Where you see footage from a CCTV camera which shows you what the person has done to be Americas most wanted. This also shows realism at it is showing the audience the real story of what has happened.

- Realism this has been show at the time code 4:16 Where you see the camera has been set up in a bad position where the lighting is not that good as the light is right in the camera. This adds to the realism as it shows that they did not have time to set up a great shot.
- Dramatisation this has been shown at the time code 7:18 Where you see that the girl is crying this add to dramatisation as it shows the audience the main persons reactions and how somethings can effect different people.
- Narritivisation this has been shown throughout this show as the documentary maker is showing the audience the mum and dads life's whilst trying to raise a baby

- Realism this is shown at the time code 1:57 Where Reggie Yates is at a place were people from Russia are walking sharing there views on what they love about Russia, it is also realistic from the time code 25:09 Where you see him speaking to an extreme nationalist, speaking about the march and what they think about it.
- Dramatisation is shown at the time code 16:30 where Reggie Yates is speaking to a girl about a picture that has been put on the internet of him, and the comments say how he is a brave man. This shows dramatisation as the audience can see how Russians react to "black people" coming into their country.
- Narritivisation this is shown throughout the documentary as Reggie Yates is taking real events and is turning it into a story for the viewers that are watching a they can find out more about the story from the people that have and are involved in the event/story that has been taking place.

- Realism this is shown at the time code 4:08 Where you see Max holding a hand held camera which shows that the shot is not perfect as he is holding the camera at himself so that he can explain to the audience what is going on. another example of this is at the time code 7:05 where you see the camera zoom in and out of Nev's face this shows to the audience that they did not have time to get the perfect shot before they switched to that certain camera.
- Dramatisation this is shown at the time code 23:04 where the is dramatic music to add to the tension of if the girl is really going to meet the guy that she has fallen in love with. This adds dramatisation during the show as it makes the audience feel tense in wanting to know whether it is a real person or if she has been catfished.
- Narritivisation this has been done as Nev and Max have turned the girls real events into a story, by showing and asking her what has happened how they met etc and then going on to find out who the person that she is speaking to is.
Performative Mode - How gay is Pakistan
The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary that shows the documentary makers story. The makers story is the focus of the documentary.
The documentary maker uses
- Realism this has been shown at the time code 9:05 where the shot that has been shown is not well composed as the camera is shown zooming in and out to create a good shot for the documentary.
- Dramatisation this has been shown at the time code 4:57 where they have used fast cuts to add to dramatisation. Another way that dramatisation has been shown is through the music at the time code 16:07 which adds to the drama as it makes the audience watching feel tense. As he is also adding voice overs on top of the music so that he can explain what has happened.
- Narritivisation is shown throughout the documentary of seeing how gay people are treated in Pakistan, who are from there but live in London.
