Secondary research for my final idea

How many murders have been gang related & who are the victims ?
"These crimes have included 24 murders, 28 attempted killings."
Knife Crime Injuries In London In August
2013 - 1,327
2014 - 1,439
2015 - 1,682
"London Gang Members committee 6600 crimes 24 of witch are murders in 3 years."
The centres director Richard Garside said "Gun homicide in England & Wales is low compared to such countries as USA, Australia, France and Italy
Salum Kombo 18 who was an art student lived in Bow on the 20/12/09 he was found dead with stab wounds.
Michael McCarthy 19 who lived in Stoke Newington was stabbed and then run over near his home on the 19/11/09.
Jamie Kelly 18 lived in Liverpool and was stabbed on the 14/09/09 and died after receiving treatment.
The standard news has shown coverage of gangs and what London is doing to crack down on gangs. The standard said "gang violence has soared in London in the past 12 months despite a hardline US- style crackdown on gang members launches earlier this year."
The standard also shared that knife crime with injury involving victims under the age of 15, up by 22 per cent and gun discharges, up by 16 per cent.
In 2000 9% of murders in USA were committed by people under the age of 18.
22% of all serious violence is carried out by gang members.

What help is given to the family's ?
This website can help families that have children involved in gangs as there is a number that you can call to ask for support or help by speaking to the family support worker.
The families can go to different contacts about there children who are in gangs one of them is Family Lives another is the NSPCC where adults that are concerned about children can call up and speak or ask someone for advice.

Why do people get involved with gangs ?
From this website I have found that people normally join gangs with "the promise of money, drugs and / or excitement."
It has also been said that some of the youths have been found to join gangs for protection of the area that they are from. Another reason for them joining the gang is due to the consequences if they decide not to join the gang.
people also join gangs due to role models, education failure, lack of identity, discrimination or poverty
For some people joining gangs could appeal to them as a friend or family could be in the gang already, which could motivate them to join that gang
Another reason why young people may join gangs is due to the respect and status that they would get from being in a gang as everyone would know them and everyone would respect them as they know they are part of a gang.
A final reason why young people may join gangs is because they want to find a substitute family, from there real family as they could have problems at home where as when they are in the gang they are treated like family and prefer it to there normal family home life.
Jonathan Toy says that pressure is one of the reasons why people join gangs. He says " The other issue is the pressure in terms of peers money and a sense of belonging. It is a cumulative, so as it builds up, those young people get involved in gangs or gang lifestyle."

Has teenage deaths increased or decreased due to gang involvement ?
Hackney Council have lost over 200 officers over 5 years has made tackling gang crimes challenging. The committee found that there was evidence that gang crime was on the increase. The mayor's office will be funding 25 projects to take on gang violence.
"the met police says youth violence fell 30% in a year"
Overall record crime fell by 6% with fewer than 45,000 reports between 2012-13
Trident gang command tackled an estimate of 250 active gangs in London
Knife crime reduced by 20% and Gun crime down by 20%
Homicides have remained at a similar amount at 106 deaths compared to 103 last year lowest number in over 40 years.
Youth violence has cut by 34% meaning 1,000 fewer victims
knife injuries involving those under 25 are down by 29%
Times gun has been fired dropped by 21%
Commissioner Bernard Hogen-Howe " We know gangs are responsible for a lot of violent crime which is why the work of this command is so important"

Mayor Boris Johnson  "By cracking down on gang activity we are successfully bringing down knife and gun related crimes.

"One in five 16 year old boys admitted to attacking someone with a knife, intending to cause serious harm."
Alun Goode Hackney Council said "Cuts in the police had made tackling gang crime challenging."
This has developed my idea as I now know what the commissioner and the mayor think of the situation. I also found out the different facts and figures of different crimes and the amount of homicides etc.

Is anyone preventing people from joining gangs  ?
August 2014 the NSPCC launched a service from there 24/7 help line, which gives parents, carers or any other adult who are worried about the child's risk or life from the gang activities or targeted by gangs the NSPCC helpline is there for them.
Trident Gang Crime Command - tackle gang violence and prevent shooting or stabbing. They have community engagement which is having someone that listens to the young people involved in gangs and acts on their concerns.
From this video you can see that they are interviewing a former gang member who know has a youth group for people that are involved in gangs.

This has developed my idea as I now know the different groups that are helping young people from joining or getting out of the gangs that they are currently in at the moment.

RDC Documentary Work Shop

The good thing I liked about making the documentary was the editing and filming. This day helped me and my partner gain the confidence to go up to people on the street and ask them if we could interview them. It was also a good experience as I learnt how to use a mic and the headphones whilst recording for the first time. This was good as when I am going to do my documentary i will know how to set it up and I will also know how to make sure that it is all on and working properly.
From this day I have learnt different techniques that I would personally use for my documentary. From watching the other documentary's I got several ideas from how i would start and end my documentary, also from editing the documentary's I thought of different songs and editing techniques that I would use.

Documentary Modes

Expository Mode - America's Most Wanted

The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary where they expose the issue and have a clear logical argument, where you have emphasised verbal commentary.

The documentary maker uses
  • Realism
  • at the time code 9:27 Where you see footage from a CCTV camera which shows you what the person has done to be Americas most wanted. This also shows realism at it is showing the audience the real story of what has happened.
  • Dramatisation at the time code 6:33 there is dramatic music being played in the background this adds dramatisation to the documentary as the audience are made to believe from the music that is playing that something interesting or bad has happened.
  • Narritivisation this has been shown during this episode as there have been real events that have been shown as a story by using voice overs to explain to the audience in more detail what is happening during the show. At the time code 5:01 the documentary maker is speaking about one of the people coming from a nice place. This shows narrative as the documentary maker is telling the story of someone to the audience.
The audience interpret this mode as very realistic as there are voice overs which provided more evidence whilst the archive footage is being shown. This gives the audience more detail on what is going on in the footage being shown.

Observational Mode - 16 & Pregnant

The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary that shows realistic events whilst the film-maker is a neutral observer. Meaning that you do not hear or see the documentary maker.

The documentary maker uses
  • Realism this has been show at the time code 4:16 Where you see the camera has been set up in a bad position where the lighting is not that good as the light is right in the camera. This adds to the realism as it shows that they did not have time to set up a great shot.
  • Dramatisation this has been shown at the time code 7:18 Where you see that the girl is crying this add to dramatisation as it shows the audience the main persons reactions and how somethings can effect different people.
  • Narritivisation this has been shown throughout this show as the documentary maker is showing the audience the mum and dads life's whilst trying to raise a baby
The audience interpret this mode as quite realistic as throughout this show you can see that the reactions that they are getting from the people that are involved are real. This is also seen as quite realistic as they camera work is not the best as some of the lighting is not the best.

Participatory Mode -  Reggie Yates

The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary that shows direct engagement between the film-maker and the subject(s)

The documentary maker uses
  • Realism this is shown at the time code 1:57 Where Reggie Yates is at a place were people from Russia are walking sharing there views on what they love about Russia, it is also realistic from the time code 25:09 Where you see him speaking to an extreme nationalist, speaking about the march and what they think about it.
  • Dramatisation is shown at the time code 16:30 where Reggie Yates is speaking to a girl about a picture that has been put on the internet of him, and the comments say how he is a brave man. This shows dramatisation as the audience can see how Russians react to "black people" coming into their country.
  • Narritivisation this is shown throughout the documentary as Reggie Yates is taking real events and is turning it into a story for the viewers that are watching a they can find out more about the story from the people that have and are involved in the event/story that has been taking place.
The audience interpret this mode as very realistic as Reggie Yates is speaking to the people that are involved in the situation. This is also seen as realistic as throughout the documentary there is archive footage that is being show which he has used as back up evidence and to also show the public (audience) what has been going on in Russia.

Reflexive Mode - Catfish

The documentary maker is trying to achieve a a truthful and clear narrative structure throughout the documentary that he is making.

The documentary maker uses
  • Realism this is shown at the time code 4:08 Where you see Max holding a hand held camera which shows that the shot is not perfect as he is holding the camera at himself so that he can explain to the audience what is going on. another example of this is at the time code 7:05 where you see the camera zoom in and out of Nev's face this shows to the audience that they did not have time to get the perfect shot before they switched to that certain camera.
  • Dramatisation this is shown at the time code 23:04 where the is dramatic music to add to the tension of if the girl is really going to meet the guy that she has fallen in love with. This adds dramatisation during the show as it makes the audience feel tense in wanting to know whether it is a real person or if she has been catfished.
  • Narritivisation this has been done as Nev and Max have turned the girls real events into a story, by showing and asking her what has happened how they met etc and then going on to find out who the person that she is speaking to is.
The audience interpret this mode as realistic as throughout the show you see them making the documentary you also see hand held cameras being used which shows that they did not have any time to set up a good shot to make it look nice. This is also quite realistic as the people's reactions in the show are real from how they are shown in the documentary.

Performative Mode - How gay is Pakistan

The documentary maker is trying to achieve a documentary that shows the documentary makers story. The makers story is the focus of the documentary.

The documentary maker uses
  • Realism this has been shown at the time code 9:05 where the shot that has been shown is not well composed as the camera is shown zooming in and out to create a good shot for the documentary.
  • Dramatisation this has been shown at the time code 4:57 where they have used fast cuts to add to dramatisation. Another way that dramatisation has been shown is through the music at the time code 16:07 which adds to the drama as it makes the audience watching feel tense. As he is also adding voice overs on top of the music so that he can explain what has happened.
  • Narritivisation is shown throughout the documentary of seeing how gay people are treated in Pakistan, who are from there but live in London.
The audience interpret this mode as very realistic due to the camera set up where the shots are badly composed. Another reason this is shown as realistic to the audience is because of the way that the maker reacts to certain things for example at the time coed 12:15 where he is speaking to the imam about being gay you can see that the makers reaction to what he says he is shocked.

Factual TV Rules for Beginners

For this blog post I will be describing and exampling 9 Factual TV Rule's, using 4 different documentaries. The 4 documentaries that I will be using are

  • KKK : The fight for White Supremacy
  • Reggie Yates : Race Riots USA
  • Is Britain Racist
  • We Want Our Country Back
In these 4 documentaries the topic is about racism in USA and in Britain. The angle of these documentaries are for the KKK - which is more of a neutral angle where he is letting the audience decide what they what to think about the KKK. Race Riots USA is more of a bias angle as he says that what has been done is bad and that the black killing has to stop. Is Britain Racist the angle to this is more neutral as she does not judge people for who there are during the documentary. We Want Our Country Back is neutral as they are also not judging anyone on what they believe so they are giving the audience a chance to think about what the people are doing and if it is right or wrong.

Accuracy - This is when the facts that are given are true / accurate which shows that the documentary maker has researched the facts which is staying in the contract with the viewer as they are not adding lies in to the story to make it up. An example of this is at the time code 9:23 where you see archive footage of the hangings that were happening whilst the KKK were thriving. This effects the documentary production as it  is showing how accurate the information that was given in the past was true as there is archive footage as proof.
Another example of this is in the documentary Is Britain Racist. At the time code 0:02 they show archive to back up the point of if Britain is racist. This effects the documentary production as its shows the audience what is going on in certain parts on Britain as you can see that the footage that has been sent in looks quite recent.
A third example of this is Race Riots USA as during this documentary he speaks to the real people that have experienced the topic that he is speaking about. At the time code 6:46 you see Reggie Yates with a young boy who was Michael Browns friend and he was explaining to Reggie what had happened. This effects the documentary production as the audience know that the facts that are being told are accurate as they can see that the person that Reggie Yates is speaking to and getting facts from is someone that witnessed what happened. Another example from Reggie Yates is that they have archive footage of what took place and they also have the autopsy reports. At the time code 7:20 there is archive footage of the march that the black people done to raise awareness for Michael Brown. This also effects the documentary production as they show how accurate the situation was as there is footage from what actually happened.

Balance - This is when the documentary maker shows both sides to a story, which means that the audience can see different sides to a view that the documentary is trying to make.
An example of this is in KKK documentary at the time code 0:49 you see how the black people are reacting to the KKK, however at the time code 1:08 you also see how the white people feel about who should be in charge. This effects the documentary production as it shows the audience both sides to a story and it also gives the

audience a chance to see who they think is right or wrong.

Another example of this is in the Race Riots USA, where Reggie Yates goes to different people to get there opinion. At the time code 3:53 he speaks to someone that was involved in the incident, and then at the time code 10:23 he speaks to people who are on the side of police who are mainly white. This effects the documentary production as it show the audience who is on who's side and also shows the audience what other people have done to help the side that they are supporting or that they have been supporting.
A third example of Balance is in the documentary Is Britain Racist where they show different people who are not racist and people who are racist, and also give them a chance to justify them self's. At the time code 3:04 you see someone who says that she is not racist but is part of the EDL and at the time code 43:13 there is a man who is quite racist. This effects the documentary production as the audience can see what people in Britain think about other cultures and things like that.

Impartiality - This is when the documentary maker stays neutral during the documentary so that the audience are not influenced by there opinion, they can make up there own mind on what they want to think about the topic.
An example of this is We Want Our Country Back, were the women is not being impartial at the time code 1:40 the women is speaking about how they get called all sorts of names like being racist however after she speaks about how there are too many Muslims and that there should not make any more mosques in London. This effects the documentary production as it does not give the audience time to have there own opinion and think about what is right as someone else is just saying what is right and worn for them. However the documentary maker is impartial throughout the documentary as he is just describing what is going on during the documentary.

Objectivity VS Subjectivity - Subjectivity is an opinion and Objectivity is saying the facts. Some documentaries have a mixture of subjectivity and objectivity to make it more interesting to the viewers so that there is that balance of opinion and facts.
An example of this is in the KKK documentary where there is a lot of subjectivity from the people involved in the KKK and also a lot of subjectivity from the black people as well. This is shown at the time code 0:56 where the black women shows that she does not like any white people as she is racist to the documentary maker. However at the time code 2:46 the white man in the green is saying that the whites are loosing the racial war. During this documentary the documentary maker is objective as he is just stating the facts and not sharing his opinion or judging anyone. This effects the documentary production as it shows the audience 2 sides to one story and gives them the chance to choose who's side they are on or no side as the documentary maker is just giving them facts and not his opinion.
Another example of this is in the Race Riots USA where Reggie Yates shows a lot of his opinion and other opinion but then he also shows that what actually happened is the facts and this is backed up by archive footage etc. At the time code 2:19 he shares his opinion of what he thinks about being a black man in America. However at the time code 5:44 there is archive footage showing facts of what happened during the incident. This effects the documentary production as the audience are going more to the side of Reggie Yates as he is giving his opinion during the documentary as well as the other people giving there opinion about what is going on as well.

Opinion - The audience can get influenced by the documentary makers opinion or someone else's opinion as they are not getting the facts where they can decide for them self's.
An example of this in the KKK documentary the father to the little boy believes that all while people are suprem and that they are gods chosen people, this occurs at the time code 5:25.
This effects the documentary production as the audience get to see what a person that is involved in the KKK believe and what there opinion is of the KKK.

Another example of this is in the Reggie Yates documentary where he speaks to the boy who was Michael Browns friend where he shares his opinion on what happened on the night and that what happened should not have happened, this occurred at the time code 3:40, however at the time code 9:28 you see the people that are supporting the police speak about how the police are doing what they are doing to save their life's. This effects the documentary production as the audience get to see both sides to the story and how different people feel about the same thing that occurred when Michael Brown died.
A final example is in the documentary We Want Our Country Back at the time code 1:24 you see the 2 boys speaking there opinion about how there are too many Muslims in Britain. This effects the documentary production as it shows the audience what people that are racist but say they are not think about different cultures in Britain.

Bias - This is where the documentary maker is sticking to one side of the story, so they are being one sided on a certain topic during the documentary, this can also occur from the person or people that are getting interviewed.
An example of this where it is not shown by the documentary maker is in 3 of the documentary series which are KKK We Want Our Country Back and Is Britain Racist, in these 3 documentary a the documentary maker stays completely neutral during the documentarys as they are just telling the audience the facts and letting the audience listen to other people who are involved opinions.
However in the Reggie Yate Race Riots USA, Reggie Yates is bias towards the black people and you can see this at the time code 5:30 where he says that what happened shocks him and at the time code 8:05 you also see that Reggie sympathises with the boy as he speaks about what happens. This effects the documentary production is that if the presenter is being bias it does not give the audience a chance to sympathises with any of the other people as the presenter is saying what they think about what is going on in there mind.
Representation - This is how it shows a group or certain person during this documentary by using different techniques like voice overs or edits, this can make the person or group of people look good or bad.
An example of this is in the KKK where the documentary represents the people that are involved in the KKK seem like nice people and that they are not bad people, but represent the people of the KKK of religious people that just believe in something different to everyone else, this is shown at the time codes 4:21
Another example is in the documentary Is Brietain Racist at the time code 3:23 where the EDL are shown trying to grab
the camera this represents them as being aggressive as the team were attacked during secret filming. This effects the documentary production as the audience can see how different people are represented even though they are doing something that is not been agreed by certain people/most people in the country.
Access & Privacy - Access is the viewers right to know what is going on within that certain topic during the documentary, however privacy is someones right to have a limit on what is to be shown on camera for example blurring someones face. However this depends on how important it is for the audience to know.
An example of this is in the we want our country back documentary were the presenter was given access to the place for 4 months which then allows the viewers to see what is going on within the group of people. This is shown at the time code 1:05
Another example of this is in the is Britain racist documentary, were at the time code 5:01 You see that they are secretly filming the EDL to show the true colours of the people involved as when the cameras are shown people can put an act on to seem nice, this has been done to show the audience what is going on in Britan.
A final example of this is also is Britain racist where they send the Muslim girl out at the time code 10:03 where the first time she is treated nicely and people tell her were to go when she is lost etc, however once she puts on the nikarb the people are very disrespectful and this had to be done secretly to show the audience what can happene to different types of Muslims.
This effects the documentary production as it shows the viewers what they know about there country and also shows them what is happening in different parts of the country were it is not so multi-cultured.  Contract with the viewer - This is when the documentary maker at the beginning states that what is being shown during the documentary is true, however this can be broken by the documentary maker adding in lies to make the documentary look and sound more interesting.
An example of this is in the documentary of supersized me where it has been proven that the results that occurred can not be replicated. Even simple mathematics disagrees that the mcdiet consisted of 5,000 calories a day. This was also proven to breach the contract of the viewers as after the documentary he said he had problems with liver or cholesterol, however when healthy college students were tasked to take 6,000 calories a day after 30 days they had no troubles with there liver or cholesterol. This is sometimes done to make the documentary see more interesting to make more people watch it.

Good & Bad News Report

In both of news report Chloe and I spoke about how most of the stealing has been tracked back to the younger generation.
Good News Report
This is a good news report as there is a formal introduction of myself and what the story will be about this is done at the time code 0:10. I am dressed formally and I am wearing glasses which gives the audience the idea that i can be trustworthy this is shown throughout the report. During the report I have a professional tone of voice which is important when addressing the audience as I sound believable, which is shown throughout the report. At the tome code 0:20 I introduce Chloe in an interview with Chloe and I state who he is and what the interview is about. This is done to give the audience an insight to what the interview will be about. At the time code 0:24 Chloe has a live tone when introducing herself and Kori in the interview. The questions throughout were very formal as the audience was given enough information which informed them about local robberies. At the end of the interview at the time code 0:43 Chloe closes the interview by thanking Kori then redirects it straight back to the studio. At 0:45 I thank Chloe for the interview and direct it to another part of the news show which indicates to the audience that the report is over.

Bad News Report
This is a bad news report as throughout the report Chloe and myself were very informal. This can bee seen at the time code 0:09 where it starts with very bad camera language and then chloe has to tell me when to go at 0:14. I introduced the show by saying 'Yo', after having an intense moment with chloe 0:17. Throughout this opening, the camera language is all bad. At 0:27 someone cuts across the camera to interfere with what is behind me and it distracts me and chloe "camera operator'. Chloe introduces 'kori' at 0:43 in which she rubs her eye and has bad posture. 0:46 there is a bystander in the shot who comes up close to the interview and distracts once again. Throughout this part, chloe has a very dull tone to her voice which makes it non interesting and the questions she asked aren't practical enough to get the viewers attention.

Analysis of A news package

The news report that I am analysing is the London Riots 2012. During this news report the 6 conventions are used throughout below are the time coded examples of where the conventions have been used.

Report Structure At the start of the of this news report there is sign in and context. This is done at the time code 0:01 where the reporter speaks about what is happening with the riots and where it is happening. This is done to give the audience more knowledge on what is happening in the area where the riots are and also where the riots are spreading to.
During the news report there is a lot of archive footage. This is done at the time code 2:23, where the archive footage is showing a building on fire. This is done to make the audience visually see what is happening during the riots. This also adds realism to the story as they audience can visually see what is happening in London.
In this report the facts are given by the anchor saying it to the audience and then having archive footage to back the point up. At the time code 2:22 the anchor speaks about where the violence has spread to then speaks about the fire in Croyden. This is done so that the audience will believe what the anchor is saying. This is also done to give more emphasis to how serious this news report is. A reporter is at the scene where the police are. At the time code 3:18 there is a reporter shown on location of where the riots are taking place. This has been done to inform the audience on how dangerous the situation is as she is standing in front of a police line.

Field Reporter
The field reporter that is doing this story is wearing smart / formal type clothing. At the time code 3:23 you can see that the reporter is wearing a blazer with a top and trousers. This has been done to make the audience believe what the reporter is saying, where as if the reporter had on a tracksuit the audience would not believe what she is saying.
In this report the field reporter is an observer. At the 3:18 you see the reporter standing behind the police line. This is done to communicate to the audience how dangerous the situation is as she is standing at a safe distance in front of the police line.
The choice of the reporter is a white female who is quite posh. At the time code 3:18 you can see that the reporter is a white female, and when she speaks she speaks quite posh.
There are no graphics whilst the reporter is speaking to the audience.

Mode Of Address
After the opening introduction the anchor introduces a serious tone to the audience. At the time code 2:11 the anchor has a serious tone of voice. This is done to make the audience aware of a serious problem/issue that was occurring in London at the time.
The language complexity was not that complex. At the time code 2:04 - 2:54 you can see that she is using quite simple words so that all viewers can understand. This has been done as it is a serious matter and there is no need for complex words during the report.
Fact provider Vs Analysing expert. At the time code 2:02 - 3:39 all the reports just say facts and do not speak about there opinion. This is done to just give the audience all the facts on what is happening around London, as this is not a story where opinions count.

Links To Studio
The reporter has pre-recorded the scene of where part of the riots were. At the time code the reporter is with the police, you can see that it is not live as it does not say live in the corner or anywhere on the screen. The reports level of involvement is not to much as she is at a safe distance in Hackney so that nothing will happen to her. This has been done to show the audience the danger of going to where the riots are happening.
3:18
The camera language for the report is quite creative. At the time code 2:03 the camera swoops down towards the anchor as she is about to start the report. This is done to get the audiences attention to look at the anchor as the camera continues to go closer to her until 2:14 where it is now stationed at a mid shot.
There is a package during this story even though it is breaking news this is because it has been going on for several days. At the time code 2:06 the anchor starts to the speak about the riots and what has been happening during the riots. This has been done to update the audience on what has been going on and also where the riots are now moving to.

Interviewing Experts And Witnesses
Whilst interviewing Acting Commissioner Tim Godwin the camera technique that is used is a 4:52 you can see the camera is placed straight on Tim Godwin in a mid shot. This is done to show the audience that this is a serious interview and that the things the police officer is stating is serious.
mid shot. At the time code
The location of this interview is outside the metropolitan police building. At the time code 4:55 you can see the metropolitan police sign in the background. This has been done to help frame the story for the audience watching at home.
The statues of the interviewee is that he is a commissioner which means that he is second in charge. Tim Godwin is being interviewed to give the audience more of an insight of what the police will be doing to try an keep control of what is going on in London.
There is a graphic of the person being interviewed. At the time code 4:53 the graphic comes up of the name and what the person being interviewed does this done to to give the audience information on who is being interviewed and what role he is playing in trying to get control of the riots.

Actuality Footage
This piece of footage has come from a non professional camera, most probably a passer by 5:21 you can see the footage of people trying to smash a shop window using chairs. This has been used because the news has not got any footage of something like that as they was not there in time. There has only been a small amount of the footage used as the footage is not to clear and that could be the only amount the person recording had recorded. The news have made it easier for the audience by adding voice overs, over the top of the actuality footage at the time code 5:23. All of this has been done to make the audience realise how serious the situation is and also to make the audience see how bad the riots are in certain areas.
or someone actually involved. At the time code

Factual programming conventions

Special Interest Documentary

Definition - This is a traditional documentary which has a very small appeal. This is a documentary that is rarely shown on a mainstream TV show for example BBC or ITV1. This documentary also focuses on one story per episode.

A example that I am using for the sub-genre is River Monsters. In this episode Jeremy Wade is going out to look for alligator gar who have been terrorising the local people, who Jeremy wade intends to get face to face with.

At the beginning of this show there is a voice over that Jeremy Wade does to get the audience to know what this episode will be about. At the time code 0:02 Jeremy Wade starts the voice over speaking about a monster of the south that has been accused of a series of attacks. The voice over has been done at the beginning of the show because it gives the audience information about what is going to happen in that episode. This also engages the audience to watch the show as they want to find out what happens in the show and if he catches the animal he is looking for.
Also at the beginning of the show there is an edit montage of what happens throughout the show. At the time code 0:04 as well as the voice over there is also an edit montage which shows some of the things that happens throughout the episode whilst he is speaking about it. The edit montage has been done at the beginning of the show because it shows the audience some of the exciting things that they will see in the show if they continue to watch. This is also done to engage the audience to continue to watch the programme to see some of the things they saw in the montage.
During the beginning of the show whist the edit montage is going on there is also music which is quite intense. At the time code 0:10 some music which is quite intense starts to play to give the edit montage and the show more of a scary effect. This has been done to make the show more intense for the audience. This makes it more engaging for the audience as the music adds effect to the visual things that they are seeing on the show.
A final convention that is used in this show is use of experts. At the time code 4:00 Jeremy Wade recruits Babba Bedre who is a bowfishing guide who is an expert at finding alligator gar. Use of experts has been done to give the show more excitement for the information that the expert can give to Jeremy Wade to help him catch the river monster that he is looking for.

Make Over Show

Definition - This is a documentary which a member of the public life is transformed for the better. This could involve their physical appearance or it could involve an issue in their life. This documentary usually focuses on one individual in each episode.

A example that I am using is west coast customs, in this episode Ryan and his team are customise a Range Rover, whilst also customising a monster truck, with skull details imprinted on to the truck.

At the beginning of each show there is a edit montage. At the time code 0:02 - 0:27 there is the edit montage that occurs on every show where it shows previous episode cuts. The edit montage has been done at the beginning of each show to engage the audience by showing the positive outcome that can occur from the show.
During the show there is usually a voice over about a product. At the time code 1:53 there is a voice over of the shop owner Ryan speaking about what the client wants the Range Rover to look like and how he wants it to be designed. The voice over is done to give the audience more insight to what the car will potentially look like once completed.
During the show when Ryan is on the phone to a customer there is music playing in the background. At the time code 2:30 the music is played in the background to make the audience feel calm about the situation that Ryan has put himself and his team into by making the new Range Rover.
Near the end of the show the producers edit the show so that the outcome is concealed, and also there is suspense. At the time code 37:50 the use of suspense and concealing the outcome is done so that the audience will want to watch till the end to find out if the car managed to be finished on time. This makes it more engaging for the audience as they do not know what happens at the end of the show.
A final thing that happens during this show is framing to create meaning. At the time code 8:32 you can see that when Ryan is speaking to one of his team members that he is annoyed about he is going to have to build the car. This engages the audience as throughout the episode they can see if he gets more annoyed about the car having to be built this way or if he just gets on with building the car.

Discussion

Definition - This is a documentary which is a studio panel show. This type of documentary usually has a live audience which engage in general discussion about topics that are up to date in the media.

The example that i am using for discussion is Gillette soccer Saturday. This is a Christmas episode where they will be speaking about all the matches that are happening.

A convention that is used at the beginning of the show is an edit montage. At the time code 0:05 there is an edit montage of what has happened throughout the year in the football matches. This has been done to get the audience interested in the show as they see from the edit montage some of the different matches they will be speaking about. This is also done to engage the audience to watch the show to see the different things they will be discussing.
Another convention that is used is music. At the time code 0:02 there is Christmas themed music being played over the footage. This is done to get the audience in the mood to watch the show as it is Christmas related. This engages the audience to watch the show as the music brings an up beat vibe to the show which makes the audience want to watch the show to find out what happens in the Christmas episode.
A third convention that is used during this episode is archive footage. At the time code 1:57 there is archive footage of one of the presenter and football analysts Chris Kamara. This is done to give the audience information about Chris Kamara as they reflect on his career. This engages the audience as they find out things they never knew about how his career in football began, and also how he played.
A final convention that has been used is use of experts. At the time code 0:35 the main presenter is introducing the other football presenters to the audience. This has been done to tell the audience who is going to be on the panel throughout the show. This is engaging for the audience as one of there favourite presenters could be on the panel and it would be more interesting for them to watch.

Review Show

Definition - This is a programme which has the purpose of reviewing new products within a specific field. This often includes presenters trying out new products and doing tests on these products. Which could include voice overs, over archive footage.

The example that I am using for review show is The Gadget Show. In this episode there is the former Hollyoaks stars Matt & Darren who are going to be testing out different game consoles.

A convention that has been used during this episode is Voice over. At the time code 0:05 the voice over of a women starts to introduce the two men and what they will be doing. The voice over also engages the audience as they can find out others opinions of the product.
Another convention that occurs during this episode is an Edit montage. At the time code 0:27 there is an edit montage of the different things that Matt & Darren get involved with whilst testing these different gadgets. This is engaging for the audience as they get to see what different things the men will be up to in the show. This will also keep them interested in watching the show to see all the different things they do in more detail.
A final thing that is done during this episode is Presentation of facts. At the time code 0:43 the facts of the ps vita is shown on the screen with the price, screen size what it can do and finally wifi and bluetooth. This is engaging to the audience as they can see a product that they may want to buy, and know things about it before they buy it in the stores. This also gives them clear information about the product which is what the show is about.
Throughout this episode of this show the audience's attention is grabbed by the different conventions that is used in this show. This is good for the show as they will have a wider audience.

Definition - This is studio based show where lower class or working class people come to discuss there everyday issues. In the chat shows the host can be quite judgemental towards the people that come on the show. These chat shows can also be exploitative towards the guests that appear on the show.

The example that I am using for the chat show is Jerry Springer. In this episode it is about women's boyfriends who have turned gay, which the women are not to happy about and want to discuss with there partner.
At the beginning of the show the presenter Jerry Springer leads the show. At the time code 0:01 the camera goes straight on to Jerry Springer as he goes to introduce the show and what will happen on that episode. This is done to give the audience information about what will happen on that show and also who will be on the show. This engages the audience to watch the show to find out what things happen throughout the show.
After the presenter has introduced the show there is a type of interview with the first guest about what is going on with her and her boyfriend. At the time code 0:09 the camera switches to the first guest whilst Jerry Springer is interviewing her about her boyfriend. This is done to engage the audience to give them some information about the guests that come on the show and the reason why they are coming onto the show.
Another convention that occurs during this show is framing to create meaning. At the time code 1:27 a close up shot of someone in the audience is shown looking shocked. This is done to make the audience relate towards how the audience at the show are feeling towards what was said. This impacts the audience at home as they can see other people opinions of what is happening.
A final convention that is used in this episode is use of suspense. At the time code 7:17 there is a coming up next section where it shows some short clips of what should come up next. This is done to build up suspense for the audience to make them want to wait to watch the rest of the show to see how it ends.
During this episode there are a lot of conventions that have been show to maintain the viewers interests, to keep them watching the episode and for them to tune in to other episodes. The impact that the conventions have on the audience is

This is a TV or film which shows the events of something based on fact. This uses film and narrative techniques to get the facts of an event in history to tell a story.

The example that I am using for Docu Drama is Straight out Of Compton. This film is about what happened with a youth group called N.W.A and what happened with them throughout there life.

The first convention that occurs in this film is Music. At the time code 0:02 the ghetto type stereotypical black music plays at the beginning this sets the mood for the audience who are watching. This makes it engaging for the audience as they can see from the start of the film by having the music that it will be quite an old school film about things that happened whilst most of the artist were young.
